i got stripes.

Hiya folks!

Yesterday, I spent the day trying to get a decent self-portrait for the portrait class I’m taking. I guess the photos turned out ok, but for my sour face, which I always end up wearing in an attempt to ward off lurkers when I’m out shooting on my lonesome. At least I got some clear shots of my outfit. The weather has been brisk but not too cold this winter, allowing me to wear a shorts and coat combo. I’m wearing my favorite red 50s shorts with a cream 50s coat that I recently thrifted, and just a week after thrifting an identical black one! It’s been lucky days at the thrift store. To complete this 50s flavored outfit, I’ve topped my head with a pink beret of the same era.

I’ve been having some nostalgic fun times lately, perhaps in an effort to resurrect my usual sunny self.  Recently, I dined at Sizzler’s restaurant in the town of Orange, where I spent my teenage years.  With every bite of cheesy toast, fried shrimp, chocolate mousse, my memories were revived. Most vividly, I recalled my mother’s insatiable appetite - always trying to get her money’s worth, she piled her plate precariously high each trip to the salad bar, which I never quite understood since it was all you can eat.  Though I expected the trip to Sizzler’s to be simply for nostalgia sake, I found myself raving about my meal in the same embarrassing way my mother would have - for too long and with too much enthusiasm. That same weekend, Pete and I went to Disneyland! It was a rainy day and I accidently wore slippery soled shoes, literally sliding into Tomorrowland, taking Pete along with me. It was funny, but it hurt.  Disneyland looms large in my memory, not just because I am a southern California native, but because I grew up down the street. Before going to Dland, I took Pete on a tour of the apartment complex that I grew up in, where my brothers and I used to jump the fence to pick strawberries from the strawberry field, to the annoyance of the field workers who would sometimes throw stink bombs at us.  Even though I lived just a few minutes from the Happiest Place on Earth, my neighborhood was pretty rough. Never wanting to be taken for a coward, it seemed I was always having to fight off some bully. At Disneyland, my favorite ride is Big Thunder Mountain. I’m a roller coaster lightweight, so Big Thunder Mountain is about my limit. I even think it has gotten faster, but it could just be that I’m becoming more of a wuss.

Outfit: chambray Keds, Ralph Lauren striped shirt, 50s cream coat (thrifted), 50s red shorts (Etsy), 50s pink beret (vintage store in Toronto).

this 50s suit is straight outta Compton

Compton thrift store, that is. By the way, did you get my allusion to the N.W.A. song? I'm harder than I look. haha. Speaking of hard, it's getting harder & harder to find 50s clothing at the thrift store, so when I found this 50s suit in pristine condition, I nearly dropped to my knees, and thanked the thrift store gods right there & then. Unfortunately, it's just a tad too big in the skirt, so it may be for sale soon.

a room of many horses

Our home is always a work in progress. I'd like to note that I HATE Blinds, but I've yet to find curtains that fit the size of my windows or that look right. I've found many vintage curtains at the thrift store & when I try to hang them, they look awful. I may have to make my own, but I fear I'll be half-ass in the execution. Any advice on this issue would be appreciated.

Bon weekend, gang!

kickin up dirt in Joshua Tree

IMG_1984
Joshua Tree is truly a setting worthy of the 1930s organza dandelion seed dress that I bought from Clever Nettle quite a while back. One could easily go 1930s glam with this dress, but I thought I’d wear it in the style of a desert cowgirl. I wish I wasn’t such a half-ass though -- my under slip is visibly scrunched up in all these photos. Pretty Boy Pete dressed up too in a vintage sparkly sport coat (recently thrifted in Vegas), vintage Levi’s stay press & his newly purchased vintage beatle boots. He found these boots at thrift store here in Joshua Tree. Throughout the course of our trip, I caught him many times sighing over and making googly eyes at them. They’re just a tad too small for him, but he’s smitten, and what’s a few blisters in the face of true love. True Love never did come easy. Still, I feel like I’ve corrupted him slightly. I just adore the dress I’m wearing, but I regret to inform you I did tear a few rips in the dress while kicking up dirt in the desert. Until 10:00 p.m folks, I’m built for speed, and old beautiful dresses such as these just don’t hold up. Now to hang it back up in the backroom, where I can admire it daily. kickin up dirt

Thrift stores were fruitful in Joshua Tree. I found a 50s mohair scarf, dead stock Bass oxfords, an olive- green Greek fisherman’s cap ( a rare color for this hat), and some stuff to sell on Etsy one day hopefully soon.

Stay tuned for more posts on Gram Parsons’ room at the Joshua Tree Inn, Joshua Tree National Park, and spandex rock & roll get-ups.

Outfit: 30s dress (Clever Nettle), vintage cowboy hat, which looks an awful lot like the one Gram Parsons always wore (Long Beach Flea Market), vintage motorcycle boots (thrifted), snake necklace (thrifted). Other accessories: cross necklace & earring.

50s dress? boyfriend blazer
face lift

I’ve had such a fun weekend, including my first trip to Hollywood’s oldest restaurant, Musso & Frank’s, with Elliott and Snide (Judy Gloom), Dee-Dee Ramone art exhibit with Pete, Long Beach Flea Market, my niece’s ballet, and I spent most of Sunday redecorating & cleaning the house (I still have loads to do).

Also, my bike got a full make-over. I just got it back from Elliott, who cleaned, tuned, and styled it. (Thanks a lot, bro) Pete had taken it to get powder coated beforehand. (Thanks, Petey) It looks just as I imagined it would. I’m so excited to go for a long ride, though I’ll have to wear bicycling shorts, because the new Brook’s saddle makes my crotch go numb. It’s been such a long time since I’ve gone on a proper biking adventure!

Outfit: what I think is a 50s dress, though I have some doubts, because the print is a little dark for the 50s. gray wool boyfriend blazer from the 90s, I reckon. 90s ankle boots. (everything thrifted)

I hope ya’ll had a great weekend!

Just a little something I wore to work on Thursday. I love the length of this skirt - it’s modest & sexy simultaneously. If I were to imagine a story based on this outfit, it’d go a little something like this: Tired of convent life, young gal leaves the nunnery for the City of Angels (LA). Left with nothing but a simple cross necklace, she heads to the thrift store for some bright clothing, and ends up looking like a librarian that’ll cut you if you mess.

Outfit: Vintage 90s checkered (hard to see) skirt, 60s sweater, vintage oxfords (all thrifted)
