dress like this

In love with this look - a cotton maxi skirt, exposed back, bare feet. The model is wearing a Claire McCardell bare-midriff sundress.

the last of my Arizona trip

Saguaro in bloom

pretty desert lighting

Well, folks, these are the last of my Arizona photos. These were taken on the way home from Arizona. Though Hwy 60 is basically badlands territory, there are a few little towns dotting the landscape that always fascinate me, including the town of Hope. When leaving Hope, their sign reads "Your Now Beyond Hope", but of course that message is too pessimistic for this upbeat blog. I was also pretty stoked to find that the Saguaros in the region were in bloom; I live for such sights.

Outfit: Feathers print vintage peplum top that I believe was an iceskating/artistic skating outfit at one time;  I cut out the attached bottoms. Vintage shorts. (Thrifted) Woven bag (thrifted on this trip in Flagstaff, AZ). Linda Farrow for Dries Van Noten sunglasses.

Page, AZ

Some more photos from Pete's phone:
Horseshoe Bend. After hearing about all the accidental deaths from our Hummer tour guide the day before, I couldn't bring myself to look over the edge to view Horseshoe Bend. Pete was braver than me, and got a photo with his smart phone.

Flagstaff, AZ

Pete kicking rocks in the alley
Flagstaff, AZ, is a college town filled with old buildings with cool old signs (we actually stayed in a motel that was over 100 years old, and looked very much like a quaint little whorehouse, if there is such a thing. I, in my antique slip and petticoat, fit right in). And the thrift stores were so good, they rivaled Southern California’s. When I get to knowing that a thrift store is particularly bountiful, I turn into a chicken - my eyes scanning the racks at a frantic pace, my head flicking this way and that, my heart beating rapidly. Do chicken's have fast beating hearts? All I know is sometimes I see myself outside myself, and then I say to my onlooker self  "Look at that chicken go." I’ve already sold off a lot of my thrifted loot at the flea market, but I did find for myself a dream cowgirl dress - a black 60s glitter wiggle with white fringe trim. I’ll show you some photos of it soon, and I’m definitely bringing it to Mississippi, a trip that is just around the bend. Stay tuned for a few more Arizona posts this week.

Avalon

One fine day someday soon these lovely vintage dresses will be in the shop, but in the meantime, I couldn't resist showing you some photos I took last weekend of my kindred spirit, might as well be my niece, and aspiring model, Avalon. In Rancho Palos Verdes and Palos Verdes Estates, we had loads of fun driving along the coast, listening to the Cure, and chatting about life.  Stay tuned for shop updates.

Much love.

crooked fingers and all

Hiyee. I found this photo in my draft posts. The dress sold long ago, but I love how the pink color compliments our ever-present bougainvillea. As a southern Cali native, it's so easy to take for granted the bougainvillea and the palm trees, but if they were to suddenly disappear, I'd certainly go into mourning. I wonder if I'd feel similarly if my crooked fingers were to all the sudden go straight. After all, it's the little oddities that make us special.

I'll be sharing photos of my Arizona trip just as soon as I develop the rest of my film. My last roll was pretty crappy (though there were a few good shots), so I'm hoping my latest roll will be better.
